Understanding Automotive Parts Classification

Automotive parts are classified according to their origin, manufacturing relationship with the vehicle manufacturer, distribution channel and brand under which they are sold. Terms such as OE, OEM, OES, Aftermarket and remanufactured parts help identify where a component comes from, who manufactures it and how it reaches the market.

Understanding these distinctions is essential when evaluating quality, compatibility, traceability and value. While some parts originate from the same manufacturers that supply vehicle production lines, others are developed specifically for the independent aftermarket.

OEM — ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURER

An OEM is the vehicle manufacturer responsible for designing, manufacturing or assembling vehicles and marketing them under its own brand.

OEMs define the technical specifications and quality requirements for the components used in vehicle production. These components may be manufactured directly by the OEM or, more commonly, by specialized Original Equipment suppliers operating within its approved supply chain.

Key point: Produced by an original-equipment manufacturer.

OES — OE

ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT SUPPLIER and GENUINE PARTS

Parts originating from the original-equipment supply chain, including components manufactured by suppliers that produce for vehicle manufacturers and Genuine Parts distributed under the vehicle manufacturer's brand.

OES / OE-supplier parts come from manufacturers with established original-equipment production capabilities. When sold independently, they may carry the supplier's own branding and packaging and should not automatically be considered identical to the Genuine version.

Genuine Parts are supplied under the vehicle manufacturer's brand, normally carrying its original part number and packaging, with traceability through the official supply chain.

Key point: Original-equipment supply chain — from OE suppliers to vehicle-manufacturer branded Genuine Parts.

Key point: Original-equipment supply chain, outside the vehicle manufacturer’s official network.
OES sourcing is one of QUALPEX's core strengths, providing international customers with access to selected Chinese manufacturers and suppliers with established relationships within the automotive industry.

AFTERMARKET PARTS

Replacement parts manufactured for the independent automotive aftermarket, outside the vehicle manufacturer’s official distribution network.

Aftermarket parts are produced by independent manufacturers and can offer a wide range of quality levels, specifications and price points. Selected high-quality aftermarket products can provide reliable and cost-effective alternatives to Genuine and OE-supplier parts, provided that compatibility, technical specifications and applicable market requirements are properly verified.

Key point: Independent manufacturing and distribution.

USED & REMANUFACTURED PARTS

Automotive components given a second service life through reuse or professional remanufacturing.

Used Parts are original components recovered from vehicles, inspected and selected for reuse based on their condition and suitability.

Remanufactured Parts are previously used components that undergo a controlled industrial process involving disassembly, inspection, cleaning, replacement or restoration of worn elements, reassembly and testing to restore their functionality according to defined technical standards.

They can provide a cost-effective and more resource-efficient alternative to new components while supporting circular-economy principles and reducing material waste.

Key point: Extending component life through qualified reuse and professional remanufacturing.
