Understanding OE, OES and aftermarket sourcing

One of the most important aspects of professional automotive sourcing is understanding the origin and classification of a component.

OE (Original Equipment) generally refers to components associated with the vehicle manufacturer's original equipment supply.

OES (Original Equipment Supplier) refers to components originating from manufacturers that supply parts within the original vehicle manufacturing ecosystem.

Aftermarket components are produced for the replacement market and can vary considerably in specification, manufacturing standards and quality.

None of these classifications should be treated simply as a marketing label.

For professional buyers, the objective is to understand what is actually being supplied, by whom, for which application and with what supporting information.

This becomes particularly important when dealing with vehicle brands and components that may still have relatively limited aftermarket distribution outside China.
